English Plus was very successful in its first edition. The brief for the second edition was to keep some of the design elements so that it would retain a similar feel, but it needed to be refreshed. The course was also going into markets that hadn’t used the first edition and the age range of the students would be much wider, with the lower levels being used by 11 year olds.
The First edition design had colour-coded sections within each unit. Signposting on the unit opener panel leads to the extra material at the back of the book (the ‘plus’ material).
In the second edition the main exercise fonts were retained. The colour coding largely remained, although the colours were refreshed. The graphic ‘plus’ element was brought in as a stronger part of the identity. Unit openers were given an all over image treatment to impress on the all-important ‘flick test’!
The covers also needed revision and were designed to tie in with the graphic ‘plus shapes’ used inside.
